The Key to Creating a Successful Virtual Assistant Business from the Beginning

Writer: Tara McKelveyTara McKelvey

One of the Biggest Things I Wish I Knew When Starting My Virtual Assistant Business

Starting your virtual assistant business doesn’t require you to have everything figured out on day one. In fact, one of the most liberating truths I learned early on is that you don’t need to be perfect to begin.

Your VA business will evolve as you gain experience, work with different clients, and refine your skills. And when that happens?

You can pivot, shift, and fine-tune your approach as needed.

Instead of getting caught in the “I need everything to be perfect before I start” trap, focus on these six actionable tips that will truly move you forward in your virtual assistant journey:

1. Clarity on Your Core Services: You don’t need a 10-service menu. Instead, choose 1-3 services you’re passionate about and excel in. Heard the phrase "Simplicity Sells" before? It is SO true,

2. A Simple Inquiry Process: Make it easy for potential clients to reach out. The easier it is to inquire with you, the more likely your potential client will follow through to the discovery call. I LOVE using Honeybook for my inquiry process (inquiry form, automations, follow-ups and more).

3. Showing Up Consistently: You don’t have to post daily, but being consistently present where your ideal clients hang out is key. Regular engagement on platforms like Instagram or LinkedIn builds trust and keeps you top-of-mind.

4. Learning as You Go: Real growth happens through action, not by knowing everything upfront. Embrace a mindset of continuous learning and use every project as an opportunity to refine your skills.

5. Building Connections: Networking and engaging with other business owners within the niche you want to work with.

6. Being Open to Evolving: Your niche, offers, and even pricing may shift as you grow. Embrace change as a sign of progress, and don’t be afraid to pivot when the market demands it.

These foundational steps are designed to help you start and scale your virtual assistant business confidently - even if you feel like you’re starting from scratch.

Remember, you don’t have to have it all figured out to begin; you just have to take the first step.
