- The Key to Creating a Successful Virtual Assistant Business from the Beginning
One of the Biggest Things I Wish I Knew When Starting My Virtual Assistant Business Starting your virtual assistant business doesn’t require you to have everything figured out on day one. In fact, one of the most liberating truths I learned early on is that you don’t need to be perfect to begin. Your VA business will evolve as you gain experience, work with different clients, and refine your skills. And when that happens? You can pivot , shift, and fine-tune your approach as needed. Instead of getting caught in the “I need everything to be perfect before I start” trap, focus on these six actionable tips that will truly move you forward in your virtual assistant journey: 1. Clarity on Your Core Services: You don’t need a 10-service menu. Instead, choose 1-3 services you’re passionate about and excel in. Heard the phrase "Simplicity Sells" before? It is SO true, 2. A Simple Inquiry Process: Make it easy for potential clients to reach out. The easier it is to inquire with you, the more likely your potential client will follow through to the discovery call. I LOVE using Honeybook for my inquiry process (inquiry form, automations, follow-ups and more). Grab my Honeybook 30% off discount here! 3. Showing Up Consistently: You don’t have to post daily, but being consistently present where your ideal clients hang out is key. Regular engagement on platforms like Instagram or LinkedIn builds trust and keeps you top-of-mind. 4. Learning as You Go: Real growth happens through action, not by knowing everything upfront. Embrace a mindset of continuous learning and use every project as an opportunity to refine your skills. 5. Building Connections: Networking and engaging with other business owners within the niche you want to work with. 6. Being Open to Evolving: Your niche, offers, and even pricing may shift as you grow. Embrace change as a sign of progress, and don’t be afraid to pivot when the market demands it. These foundational steps are designed to help you start and scale your virtual assistant business confidently - even if you feel like you’re starting from scratch. Remember, you don’t have to have it all figured out to begin; you just have to take the first step. Ready to dive deeper and build a thriving VA business? - Trading the 9-5 grind for a virtual assistant business
I recently stumbled upon the fig tree story… …and I thought starting these blogs with a powerful, kind of depressing but incredibly inspirational story would be a great start! In The Bell Jar , author Sylvia Plath uses the fig tree as a metaphor for the many life paths available to the protagonist, Esther Greenwood. As she imagines sitting beneath the tree, she is paralyzed by the overwhelming choices – each fig representing a different future, such as career or marriage. Fearing that choosing one fig means rejecting others, Esther debates which fig to pick – but the longer she waits, the more figs drop to the ground. Her non-actions stem from the fear of missing out on opportunities. In The Bell Jar , Sylvia Plath’s fig tree metaphor captures how life’s many options – each fig representing a potential path like career, love, or creativity – can leave us paralyzed by indecision, like choosing one means sacrificing the others. I relate to Esther. I grew up loving many things, being passionate about music, art, travel, nature, human connection, psychology, science. When it came down to choosing one to focus on in college, I was lost . I picked what felt like made the most sense at the time, which was Environmental Geoscience. This was broad enough that I wasn’t actually picking a major, but narrow enough to be able to find a job. After looking at all of the figs, I picked the one that looked the most appealing . Graduating in 2020 (COVID year) had me entering into a harsh job market and while I didn’t find a job in my field, I was able to find an executive assistant role for an incredible woman-owned engineering company. After over a year in this role, I found a job in my career field – environmental due diligence. The job I spent 4 years working towards ended up being nothing like I dreamed. I thought I would travel to cool spots, bond with my coworkers, make a great salary, all while having a good work-life balance. My fig started looking bruised , it tasted sour , and I started thinking about the other figs that I could’ve chosen. What if I got a business degree and went into HR? What if I jumped on TikTok during COVID so I could be rich and famous? What if I took time off before college to decide on what I really wanted? Instead of waiting for another fig to sprout, I decided to make my own. I attended a women’s conference in Dallas (Boss Vision Conference, 10/10 recommend) and I found Saba, a virtual assistant coach, that introduced me to the world of virtual assisting. My first Boss Vision Conference Shortly after attending this conference, well let me just drop a timeline below: I booked the course and launched my business a month later (November 2022). I landed my first client at $200 for 10 hours a month (December 2022). Landed 3 more clients at a higher price point (January & February 2023). Put in my 3 weeks notice in with my corporate job (April 2023). Started as a full-time business owner (May 2023). When you stop sitting on the what if’s and take ACTION towards what you WANT, it’s insane how fast you can make it a reality to yourself. Trading my 9-5 for a full-time virtual assistant business was a HARD choice, but if I had to do it all over again, I would make the same choice! Stick around, I’ll be dropping blogs weekly sharing tips on being a virtual assistant, CEO mindset, content creation tips, and taking you behind the scenes of running an online business! - How to Become a Full-Time Virtual Assistant with No Experience?
You don’t need “virtual assistant” experience to become a successful VA! I’m sure you’ve heard the whole “you don’t need experience to start as a virtual assistant” spiel before, but it’s not a lie! You can start your virtual assistant business without “virtual assistant” experience. The fact is, you have experiences to pull from: That part-time job you worked in college? You learned customer support. Ever been a part of an organization? That’s community engagement and management experience. Corporate career? You most likely have dabbled in project management, client relationship management, report writing, and more! You’re going to pull from your current experiences, look at what you’re good at, leverage and monetize it. What does that even mean? Let me break it down. Let’s say you love working out and you are a part of the wellness community in your city. You’re really good at client management in your full-time job, balancing different projects and coordinating follow-ups. Use this . Your first step … would be to figure out what services the wellness community (your niche) needs support with. Outreach? Social media? Booking new clients? Newsletters? ASK them! You’re already plugged into the wellness community, do some market research! Ask coaches and/or studio owners what are 1-3 things they would delegate or portions of their business that’s time consuming and they don’t need to be spending time on. Those are the services you can offer. Now of course, pick services that you actually enjoy! There’s literally no point in creating a business filled with tasks you dislike! From there, you can package these services, figure out your price point and start marketing them! For your price point, first look at the income you would like to bring in. For example, to start out you want to bring in $1,000 per month. That breaks down to: 4 clients at $250 /month 2 clients at $500 / month 1 client at $1,000 / month Don’t stop talking about your business. Share it with your friends, in your wellness community, to your family, through social media. Put yourself out there and emphasize the value that you bring to your potential clients. A huge pro-tip is to really hone in on the platforms that your ideal client lives on. If they’re typically on Instagram, market and engage with them there! These are the exact steps you can follow to go from zero virtual assistant experience to starting your virtual assistant business and beyond. These are the foundational steps that you can build on to eventually create a business that brings in $1,000, $5,000, $10,000 and more per month!
